When a document requires the equivalent of notarization for filing in a foreign jurisdiction, the follow steps are normally required (Be sure to update requirements year to year:)
1. Take Original Document to be signed before a Notary Public.
2. Then send Notarized document with original signature to the Office of Secretary of State of the state[ii] where the document was executed (i.e. Notarized in New Jersey, send to New Jersey Secretary of State’s office[iii] for Apostille).
Include in Mailing:
i. Cover letter stating Country of Destination of Document
ii. Check for Fee (varies by state) for each document to be Apostilled
iii. Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope
3. When Received forward to designated counsel or governmental official.
For South Africa[iv]: follow steps #1 & 2 above, then
4. When received from Secretary of State, must send to South African Consulate in the corresponding jurisdiction[v]:
